Horse Jumping
Lessons for Beginners
At Magister Equitum our goal is to teach the rider not just how to ride but to perform as a trainer each and
every time they approach or mount a horse. This is done through exercises and techniques that put importance
on balanced seat riding, safety and fun.
Of course the ultimate goal for any rider is to become one with your mount, feeling and anticipating what the
other is thinking.
Our lesson plans stress safety, correctness of position through the use of patterns, transitions, and lateral
movements.
The first lesson is spent learning how to groom and tack up, followed by riding time in which the rider learns
to mount, dismount, steer, stop and backup. Also basic equitation and position are discussed.
The second lesson follows the same pattern with more riding time, adding the jog and steering exercises.
Progression after this point is hard to predict because each rider is different and will progress at different
levels. At this point the instructor will assess the ability of the student and plan lessons for their personal
goals and learning of horsemanship.
Learning about horses is a lifelong endeavor and it is our goal to teach students what they need to know to be
safe, effective, fun loving horse people. We strongly believe in teaching riders how to train and ride. We want
our students to be able to handle any and all situations that may arise when riding, safely and effectively.
